Friendly Lion Face Scrubby by Red Heart

With this friendly lion, kids will enjoy bath time and he will make them smile while washing the dishes!  Crochet it in Scrubby Sparkle and it can be machine washed easily and will air dry quickly.

Scrubby measures 6-1/4 in. (16 cm.) in diameter.

MATERIALS

SUPPLIES:
RED HEART Scrubby Sparkle:
Art. E851 available in 3 oz. (85 g.), 174 yd. (159 m.) balls

  • 1 ball  Lemon A • 8215
  • 1 ball  Orange B •8260
  • 1 ball  Licorice C • 8012 (only small qty needed for this project)


TOOLS:

  • Susan Bates Crochet Hook, 4 mm. (US G-6)
  • Yarn needle, Sewing Needle and ecru thread.

DIRECTIONS

GAUGE: 8 dc = 1-1/2 in. (4 cm.)
Rounds 1-3 = 3-1/4 in. (8.5 cm.)
CHECK YOUR GAUGE.  Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

SPECIAL STITCH
sc2tog =
[insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUE
Join with sc = Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

SCRUBBY

HEAD:
With A, ch 4.
Round 1: Work 11 dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning skipped ch count as first dc); join with slip st in top of beginning ch-12 dc.
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in same set as join, 2 dc in each remaining st around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch - 24 dc.
Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat from around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-36 dc.
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-48 dc.
Round 5: Ch 3, working in back loops only, dc in same st as join, (ch 1, 2 dc) in each remaining st, ch 1; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-96 dc and 48 ch-1 spaces.
Round 6: Ch 3, dc in each dc and ch-1 space around; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-144 dc.  Fasten off.

MANE:
Round 1: Join B with sc in any unworked front loop of Round 4, *ch 4, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in next ch, skip next 2 front loops, sc in next front loop; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc.  Fasten off.

TOP OF NOSE:
With B, ch 5.
Row 1: Slip st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in last ch.  Fasten off.

BOTTOM OF NOSE:
With C, ch 5.
Row 1: Sc2tog in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, sc2tog in last 2 ch, turn-2 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog-1sc. Fasten off.

EYE (Make 2):
With C, ch 2.
Round 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with slip st in first sc.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Refer to photography for placement of facial features.  Sew all pieces with sewing needle and thread.
Nose: Sew top and bottom pieces to center of head.
Eyes: Sew in place on Round 2.
Mouth With C: embroider smiling mouth with back stitches under nose.
Trim "eyelash" strands from facial features to emphasize their shape.  Weave in ends.
